The great news is Homestead Gardens has a slew of brand spankin’ new grills in stock because so many folks asked for them. Recent stats show 89 percent of households with four or more members own a grill or smoker; more than half of them grill 1-2 times a week in the warm summer months. Definitenly good news that the grill department is raring to go just in time for Dads Day. Dad…synonymous with grilling! Bet you can’t wait to get that steak over the live fire for Dad. Another yummy idea for Fathers Day is pork tenderloin, cut into cubes and grilled along with fresh pineapple and bell peppers under a lacquer glaze. The recipe follows below.
Take a look at the number one grill leader, Weber, creator of the kettle grill. Kettle grills shine with that air flow which keeps circulating due to the design. The kettle ‘on a tripod’ has morphed into a stress free model which combines the circular airflow with a propane fuel tank for easy lighting. The kettle is housed in a base on wheels so you have side table space with ease of moving.
Weber offers an assortment of conventional-style propane grills; some with the rotisserie addition or a separate “sear station”. The Weber warranty is invaluable. I’ve heard stories of parts replaced immediately-no questions asked.
Grill Zone is another quality grill brand offered as well as smaller tabletop grills for transportation to parties, picnics or the beach. Get a cart full of grill equipment at the same time.
In my cookbook, The Grassfed Gourmet Fires It Up, I advise making the thermometer your best friend-especially with 100% grassfed meat and poultry. The weber digital thermometer is cordless-a big plus. Grill brushes, long tongs and spatulas are a must. The torches (beyond tiki) add lots of character to entire grill experience.

Lacquered-Plus Pork Skewers
for the marinade and sauce:
- 3 tablespoons toasted sesame oil
- Zest and juice of 1 fresh orange
- 1/2 cup apricot preserves
- 1/3 cup low-sodium soy sauce
- 3 medium cloves garlic, minced
- 1 medium pork tenderloin- about 1 pound, cut into 1-inch cubes
- 2 cups fresh pineapple, cut into 1-inch cubes
- 2 medium red bell peppers, cut into 1-inch cubes
Mix all lacquer sauce ingredients in a large non-metallic bowl. Remove about 1/2 cup to serve along side the skewers. Add the pork, pineapple and bell peppers and toss. Cover and let marinate-refrigerated for 2-4 hours.
If using bamboo skewers, soak in water while pork and vegetables are marinating.
Thread the pork, pineapple and bell peppers alternately on the skewers. Save the marinade to use as basting sauce.
Preheat the grill to medium-high.
Place the skewers on the grill, baste with the reserved lacquer sauce and then close lid for about two minutes. Turn skewers and continue to grill until all sides are golden, basting frequently.
Remove from grill and place on serving platter. Add a small bowl of the reserved lacquer sauce on the side.
