Happy Mother’s Day, and a Last-Minute Gift Idea

by Susan Harris

Okay, you moms probably just want a day off from all your responsibilities, but how about photos of some awesome private gardens for a little inspiration?   I snapped these in Portland, Oregon at a Garden Writers Association convention, and the plants here will most likely grow just as well in Maryland (Oregon is just a tad warmer than here).

The Last-Minute Gift Idea?
Offer to help your mom in the garden.  And this time of year the most important gardening task is weeding – it’s essential to prevent total jungle take-over by mid-summer.  If you don’t know a weed from a keeper, just ask the gardener.  Then grab a trowel and a container and get weeding!  It’s a great time to listen to your iPod (filled with music or, like my iPod Shuttle, podcasts) or to the songbirds in your garden.
